Substance Abuse Professionals (SAP) work in the field of substance abuse treatment and prevention. They come from a variety of backgrounds, including counseling, social work and medicine. SAPs play an important role in helping people who are struggling with substance abuse disorders.

A DOT SAP Evaluation is a process used to assess an employee who has violated a Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol regulation. The evaluation is conducted by a SAP, a licensed healthcare professional who has been trained and certified by DOT. The SAP monitors the case, and conducts a return-to-duty assessment, as well as provides a follow-up testing schedule.
